Culminating Activity: The Three Modern Day Totalitarian Countries

North Korea.
North Korea is a country located in the Korean peninsula. North Korea has one the most oppressive regimes in the world, still in power today. The North Korean government is a dictatorship build around one person, which is the "great leader" himself ,Kim Jong Il. He is known around the world for his brutality against his own citizens. Mass starvation, executions, imprisonment and forced labour camps are the signature of his brutal regime.




Belarus                                                                                                                                                            
Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered clockwise by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Belarus has come to be viewed as a state whose conduct is out of line with international law and whose regime is considered to grossly violate human rights and has been called "the last true remaining dictatorship in the heart of Europe" by U.S Secretary of State Condolezza Rice.The Belorussian government is known to manipulate the election outcome. They are also known to intimidate, imprison, even murder their political opponents.


  Burma                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              
 Burma officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia. Burma is bordered by China on the northeast, Laos on the east, Thailand on the southeast, Bangladesh on the west, India on the northwest, the Bay of Bengal to the southwest, and the Andaman Sea on the south. Burma is governed by a brutal military dictatorship.The Burmese dictatorship is been know to violate human rights and oppress its own citizens. There are been many anti government protests in Burma, that have resulted in brutal tortures and killings on the protesters.During the 2007 anti-government protests a significant role was played by Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the opposition to the Burmese military government. Aung San Suu Kyi was under periods of house arrest from 1989–2010. In September 2007, hundreds of monks paid respects to her at the gate of her home, which was the first time in four years that people were able to see her in public. She was then given a second public appearance on 29 September, when she was allowed to leave house arrest briefly and meet with a UN envoy trying to persuade the junta to ease its crackdown against a pro-democracy uprising,
