Culminating Activity: Aung San Suu Kyi and her resistance to the Burmese dictatorship

Aung San Suu Kyi

However, she was already been detained under house arrest before the elections. She remained under house arrest in Burma for almost 15 of the 21 years from 20 July 1989 until her most recent release on 13 November 2010. The signature of her Resistance against  the dictatorship has been peaceful demonstrations. Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for "her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights", Aung San Suu Kyi has become an icon of Burma's struggle for democracy and of the global struggle against oppression.

Culminating Activity: Modern day Police and their electronic tracking Techniques

More and more today people are making use of GPS systems, small electronic devices that allow us to tap into a satellite network and locate our position on the globe to within a couple of yards. However, many privacy advocates are worried, because the police are using this technology for tracking suspects. Should there be any restrictions on the government's ability to precisely track your every move? I believe that the use of such technology can be beneficial to the police in their quest to catch wanted criminals. However, i believe that so should be done only by court orders and by fallowing the laws of the country. The idea that someone can watch your every move strikes me as creepy and illegal.

Another well known controversial method that Police are using to track people down are the CCTV cameras. A perfect example of this method is the city of London in United Kingdom. London has 10,000 "crime-fighting" CCTV cameras which cost £200 million. But an analysis of the publicly funded spy network, which is owned and controlled by local authorities and Transport for London, has cast doubt on its ability to help fight crime. Moreover, people there are told that surveillance cameras are never abused by their operators, each of whom can supposedly be trusted not to use the awesome technology at their disposal to engage in despicable or outright illegal behaviour. When thinking about all the controversy surrounding the issue, I believe that even though CCTV cameras can in some cases help to solve crimes in major part I see them as a tool that invades ordinary people's privacy.

Culminating Activity: Four infamous historical Dictators

Adolf Hitler
If evil ever existed on earth, that would be Adolf Hitler himself. He would always  be remembered as the brutal  dictator that started World War Two. In second world war more than forty million people  died because this eccentric maniac had the power to do so. He makes the top of my list , because of the crimes and the sufferance that he has inflicted upon people are so unimaginable, and because his crimes would make other dictators look like they just graduated from "kinder garden".

Joseph Stalin

Stalin ruled the Soviet Union with an iron fist , from the early 1930s until 1953. Together with Hitler he has been classified as one of the most brutal dictators to have ever lived. In his path to power Stalin decimated all of his political opponents, the most prominent of them being Leon Trotsky, the organiser of the Red Army. Researchers on the Soviet Union subject estimate that the number of people killed under Stalin's regime could be as high as 60 million. Comrade Stalin made my list because of the number of horrific crimes that has committed on people, such as mass killings, mass starvation and forced  labour camps.

 Kim Jong-Il
North Korea's ruler has been considered by many to be one of the most brutal  dictators to have ever lived. He is a master of propaganda and uses the state run television to brainwash his own citizens.  According to state-run media, Kimg Jong Il is the most prominent statesman in the present world, and people in countries of the whole planet over celebrate his birthday with films and festivals. He has absolute  power over the country and no one is allowed to leave  North Korea. Is is estimated that more than 3 million people died from starvation in North Korea, during the early 90s. North Korea is one of the most secretive states in the world and news is hard to come by. Therefore, making this maniac ruler an enigmatic figure.

Enver Hoxha

Enver Hoxha was a Marxist–Leninist revolutionary and the leader of Albania from the end of World War II until his death in 1985, as the First Secretary of the Party of Labour of Albania. The most valuable weapon in his hand was his secret service "Sigurimi" who he used to intimidate imprison and murder political opponents and ordinary citizens alike. Sigurimi followed the repressive methods of the NKVD, MGB, KGB, and the East German Stasi. "Its activities permeated Albanian society to the extent that every third citizen had either served time in labour camps or had been interrogated by Sigurimi officers. To eliminate dissents, the government imprisoned thousands in forced-labour camps or executed them for crimes such as alleged treachery or for disrupting the proletarian dictatorship. During his Stalinist regime from 1944-1985 period. In total 6,535 people were killed or died in prison in Albania. 6,000 others died on the border, killed by border guards while trying to escape the country. I choose this lunatic to make my list not only for his brutality but also for very personal reasons. Albania is the country where i was born, but thank God because of my age i have not experienced his brutal days. However, talking to my grandparents and my parents i have learnt a lot about their sufferance and their struggle during those days. Finally,I want to conclude by saying that I am proud of my heritage and that I am really ashamed that Enver Hoxha was an Albanian.

Culminating Activity: The Three Modern Day Totalitarian Countries

North Korea.
North Korea is a country located in the Korean peninsula. North Korea has one the most oppressive regimes in the world, still in power today. The North Korean government is a dictatorship build around one person, which is the "great leader" himself ,Kim Jong Il. He is known around the world for his brutality against his own citizens. Mass starvation, executions, imprisonment and forced labour camps are the signature of his brutal regime.

Belarus
Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered clockwise by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Belarus has come to be viewed as a state whose conduct is out of line with international law and whose regime is considered to grossly violate human rights and has been called "the last true remaining dictatorship in the heart of Europe" by U.S Secretary of State Condolezza Rice. The Belorussian government is known to manipulate the election outcome. They are also known to intimidate, imprison, even murder their political opponents.

  Burma
Burma officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia. Burma is bordered by China on the northeast, Laos on the east, Thailand on the southeast, Bangladesh on the west, India on the northwest, the Bay of Bengal to the southwest, and the Andaman Sea on the south. Burma is governed by a brutal military dictatorship. The Burmese dictatorship is been know to violate human rights and oppress its own citizens. There are been many anti government protests in Burma, that have resulted in brutal tortures and killings on the protesters.During the 2007 anti-government protests a significant role was played by Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the opposition to the Burmese military government. Aung San Suu Kyi was under periods of house arrest from 1989–2010. In September 2007, hundreds of monks paid respects to her at the gate of her home, which was the first time in four years that people were able to see her in public. She was then given a second public appearance on 29 September, when she was allowed to leave house arrest briefly and meet with a UN envoy trying to persuade the junta to ease its crackdown against a pro-democracy uprising,

1984 Blended: My Experience in Beautiful Communist Cuba

In 2005, I went for the first time in vacation to Cuba. Before leaving for my vacation, my idea of Cuba was that of a gorgeous country, with lots of sunshine and world renowned beaches. However, it is also fair to say that i had heard about the dark side of Cuba, which refers to its totalitarian and oppressive communist regime that  has brought misery and  poverty upon its own citizens. The first day that i got there I remember being exited. The weather was hot and the day was full of sunshine. From the airport to the resort, were I was going to stay, was about ten minutes drive, so I could not see much of  the surroundings. Upon arrival at the resort we were received by warm and friendly staff. While enjoying the food, the life in the resort and the days at the beach it did not take long for me to come across the other side of Cuba. My first encounter with the reality outside the resort was when we went on a day excursion trip. I remember being in shock and feeling like i was exploring some other planet during that day trip. All i could see was destroyed roads, buildings with no windows, and piles of garbage everywhere. So all  i had heard about the life outside the resorts was true. On our way back to the hotel I remember being upset from what I had seen and I started questioning myself if I had done the right thing to have come  there in the first place. In a sense I started to feel guilty, because i was seeing the money that i was spending to vacation there  as a contribution to the dictatorship therefore keeping them in power so they can oppress and control their own citizens. At the end of my vacation I remember leaving Cuba with mixed feelings, because i really had fun in the resort but i was shocked about how poor and underdeveloped such a beautiful country was. Finally, leaving all that paradox behind i remember saying to myself that I would not contribute to the dictatorship anymore, and the only time i would ever go back to Cuba was when the people had the rights and freedoms that we all enjoy in our country.

The Edmund Fitzgerald Song

Lyrics:

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they called "Gitche Gumee"
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
when the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty,
that big ship and true was a bone to be chewed
when the Gales of November came early

The ship was the pride of the American side
coming back from some mill in Wisconsin
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
with a crew and good captain well seasoned,
concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
when they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ship's bell rang,
could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?

The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
and a wave broke over the railing
And ev'ry man knew, as the captain did too
'twas the witch of November come stealin'
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
when the Gales of November came slashin'
When afternoon came it was freezin' rain
in the face of a hurricane west wind

When suppertime came the old cook came on deck sayin'
"Fellas, it's too rough t'feed ya"
At seven P.M. a main hatchway caved in; he said,
"Fellas, it's bin good t'know ya!"
The captain wired in he had water comin' in
and the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when 'is lights went outta sight
came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Does any one know where the love of God goes
when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
if they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
they may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
of the wives and the sons and the daughters

in the rooms of her ice-water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams;
the islands and bays are for sportsmen
And farther below Lake Ontario
takes in what Lake Erie can send her,
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
with the Gales of November remembered

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed,
in the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral
The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times
for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they call "Gitche Gumee"
"Superior," they said, "never gives up her dead
when the gales of November come early"Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
